Luke Crowhurst - BBA Apprenticeship

One of the biggest investments that we make at Burden Bros Agri, is related to staff training and certification. Every sector of our team from Administration, Sales, Parts, Service, specialisations such as Integrated Solutions and company management, all undergo a thorough training programme to give them every level of capability in carrying out their particular role. We totally understand that to provide the ultimate customer service, every member of our team, needs to be thoroughly trained and educated to carry out that task.

A very recent example of achievement is service technician Luke Crowhurst who has just completed his three-year ‘apprenticeship academy’ programme, part of what’s called the JD University. The first two years of the programme consists of a ‘land-based’ engineering tech, Level 2 Diploma. Each year consists of four blocks of John Deere University training in Nottinghamshire.

Within that two-year programme, the course includes such subjects as health & safety, engine technology, transmissions, electronics, implements, combine harvesters and welding - to name but a few. Each course consists of practical and theory elements, after which the candidate must complete several seven-thousand-word essays, to show that they have achieved a full understanding of each of the subjects. If they fail to achieve a successful pass level, they must re-sit the course. No-one gets through unless they fully understand the subject.

In the third year of the programme, the candidate focusses on the additional subject of diagnostics - technical reviews of what might be causing a malfunction in a wide range of technical sectors and how to resolve the issue - efficiently.

Commented Luke Crowhurst, “For me, the extent of personal development, driven by this apprenticeship programme has been phenomenal. I have met other apprentices from across the UK and learnt a lot about life as well as my career. I have interacted with highly capable tutors who have given me so much encouragement in my capabilities. In the third year, the degree of diagnostics training was so valuable that it helped me develop my confidence and therefore my value as a team member. The entire course has made a major impact on how I see myself and my value to others.”

Throughout the three years programme candidates sit both practical and theory exams, with specific reviews to ensure they are achieving the acceptable level of understanding. Each individual also undergoes training related to professional presentations and interviews, to ensure they are prepared for dealing with a customer interface and presentation of technical subject matter. After fulfilling the three-year programme to all levels, the candidate is certified to national standards as an LTA2 - a newly qualified apprentice or assessed skilled technician who meets the set industry criteria - which in this circumstance relates to farm machinery and ground-care machinery.

Added Luke “From here, I am focussing on specialisation subjects which will include harvest equipment, crop-care and sprayer technology, AMS and Kramer tele-handlers. My personal motivation is to take my education to the next level which will include functional skills including Maths, English and ICT, all part of the apprenticeship focus. Further education plans will help me to achieve the next level of an LTA3 and then ultimately to LTA4 - which essentially is the Master Tech achievement - the top of the ladder. Burden Bros Agri have been very supportive in helping me to achieve my fully certified qualifications and it means I can give one hundred per cent in my job and ensure I fulfil the needs of our customers to the level they expect.”
